VaultRule Vault Lock Rule: Make the Vault Spend-Proof

Use the VaultRule vault lock rule to protect bill money. Remove Vault spending access, pay bills by autopay, and add alerts so mistakes can’t happen.

The VaultRule vault lock rule makes your Vault spend-proof. If you can’t easily spend bill money, you won’t “accidentally” break the system on a busy day.

The rule: The Vault should be easy to fund and easy to pay bills from — but hard to use for random spending.

Why this matters (the #1 VaultRule failure)

Most people don’t break VaultRule because they “can’t budget.” They break it because the Vault is too accessible: one tap, one swipe, one impulse… and suddenly bills are exposed.

If you’re new to Vault/Flow, start here: VaultRule two-account system (simple version).

The 7-minute Vault Lock setup (do this once)

  • 1) Remove the Vault card from your wallet (physical wallet + mobile wallet). You don’t need it for daily life.
  • 2) Disable “easy spending” features on the Vault if your bank allows it: online payments, contactless, cash withdrawals, card present spending. (Anything you don’t need for bills.)
  • 3) Keep bills paid by autopay / standing orders from the Vault, not by swiping a card.
  • 4) Use one clean bill-paying routine so nothing drifts: VaultRule bill pay checklist.
  • 5) Turn on two alerts on the Vault: low balance + large transaction. Setup guide: VaultRule alerts & guardrails.
  • 6) Keep Vault funding automatic so you never “forget” to top it up: automate VaultRule on payday.
  • 7) Add a Vault note (in your bank app if possible): “Bills only. Do not spend.”

What if a bill needs a card?

If a provider “requires” a card, try this order:

  • Best: switch to bank transfer / direct debit / standing order.
  • If card is truly required: use a dedicated method that’s still controlled (alerts on, no daily spending on it, only that bill).

If your bill list is messy, fix the foundation first: VaultRule banking checklist.

If the Vault ever gets hit by a random expense

Don’t panic. Do a clean recovery:

  • Step 1: Move money back into the Vault immediately (so bills stay safe).
  • Step 2: Add friction so it can’t happen again (remove the card / disable features / tighten alerts).
  • Step 3: If Flow is now tight, follow this exactly: what to do when Flow runs out.
