Spending alerts are the easiest “guardrails” you can add to VaultRule. They stop overspending before it happens — without tracking every purchase.

The goal (simple)
You want Flow to warn you early, while Vault stays protected.
- Flow alerts prevent overspending.
- Vault reminders prevent missed bills.
If you haven’t set a Flow cap yet, do that first: How to Set Your Flow Limit (Spending Cap).
Alert #1: Low-balance alert for Flow
Set a notification when Flow drops below a number that matters (example: €100 or €50). This gives you time to slow down before you hit €0.
Alert #2: Weekly “checkpoint” notification
Once per week, check Flow balance and ask one question: Will this last until the next payday?
If not, you freeze optional spending for a few days. (That’s the whole system working.)
Alert #3: Bill reminders (Vault side)
If your bills aren’t fully automated, set reminders for due dates so Vault stays “quiet and boring.”
Guardrail #1: Automation first, then alerts
Alerts work best when the system is already automated. Use:
- Automate VaultRule on Payday
- VaultRule Automation Templates (monthly/biweekly/weekly schedules)
Guardrail #2: Separate accounts (if you keep breaking the rule)
If you keep transferring money out of Vault, your setup needs stronger separation. Use:
What if Flow still hits €0?
That can happen — don’t touch Vault. Use: What to Do When Flow Runs Out.

A practical alert setup
| Alert | Useful starting rule | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Vault low balance | Before the balance falls below the next seven days of bills | Check upcoming withdrawals and the last transfer |
| Flow low balance | Before only a few days of normal spending remain | Slow optional spending; do not raid Vault automatically |
| Large transaction | An amount unusual for that account | Confirm it in the official bank app |
| Transfer or new device | Every occurrence | Investigate immediately if you did not initiate it |
Thresholds should reflect your own bills and typical transactions. Too many low-value alerts create noise; too few leave long gaps before you notice a problem.
